New Music

A founding aim of the Choir has been to commission new works for children’s voices from the leading lights in contemporary music, as well as up-and-coming young composers. To date the Choir has commissioned over 50 new works by a diverse selection of composers including Simon Bainbridge, Judith Bingham, Joseph Phibbs, Andrew Simpson, Howard Skempton, and Param Vir. A new work by Oscar Bettison was performed at the Wigmore Hall in 1996, the first children’s choir to perform at this prestigious venue.

The Choir’s 25th anniversary (2016-2017) was celebrated with a concert at the Milton Court Concert Hall which featured 7 new works written for the choir, including the winning entry of the inaugural NLCC composition competition for schools by Katrina Toner, and commissions from Sir Karl Jenkins, Paul Archbold, Ronald Corp, Russell Hepplewhite, Christopher Hussey, and Tom Smail. A further 5 new works will be heard at a concert at St James’s Piccadilly in March 2018.

The Choir has also given the premières of numerous works by composers including Gerald Barry, Louis Andriesson, Tan Dun, Alexander Goehr, Thea Musgrave, Charlotte Bray, Anna Meredith, Sally Beamish and Mark-Anthony Turnage.

Ronald Corp, himself an accomplished and published composer, has written numerous works which have entered the Choir’s repertoire.
