Children can begin to sing in Training Choir from the age of 7 and every child who wishes to sing is welcome – there is no audition and the emphasis is on the enjoyment of singing together. Through weekly sessions with Ron, the children develop their singing and general musical skills. Each week, some time is devoted to general musicianship and understanding musical notation – all taught through the material they are singing, which is taught both with and without notation. Over time, children develop the skills they will need should they wish to audition for Senior Choir around the age of 11: listening to each other, watching the conductor, beginning to learn to sight read, developing their singing voices, focusing on detail. Any young child interested in music would have much to gain by joining this ensemble.
The Training Choir performs a concert each term but also has opportunities to get involved in larger events with the Senior Choir such as in Carmina Burana at the Royal Festival Hall in 2016 and at the BBC Proms in 2017 in the Royal Albert Hall.
